Liposarcoma Treatment

Liposarcoma is a rare type of cancer that develops on the connective tissues but resembles more-of fat-cells when viewed on a microscope. Liposarcoma can develop on any part of your body. however, based on research, more than 50% of liposarcoma cases, it involved the thigh while up-to a third was found to develop in the abdominal cavity though this type of cancer often affects adults that are between the age of 40-60 years but on small instances that it does develop in children but if it happens then it usually develops during their teenage years.

There are majorly four types of liposarcoma though each one has its own unique behaviors as well as characteristics. They include;

• Myxoid liposarcoma
• Well-differentiated liposarcoma
• De-differentiated liposarcoma
• Pleomorphic liposarcoma

Causes liposarcoma

There are no specific causes of liposarcoma though patients have reported to develop a tumor after experiencing an injury but until today, major causes of lipasarcoma is noy yet known. In addition, no clear report has proven that liposarcoma can develop from benign lipomas that is, harmless fat lumps or even develop as a result of trauma.

Symptoms of liposarcoma

You will not feel sick when you develop liposarcoma but you’re likely to notice a lump which is usually painless but with a slow growth. However, liposarcoma tumors in the abdomen tend to grow quite large even before they are found.

Liposarcoma Treatments

There are various ways of treating Liposarcoma that include;

1. Surgery

Surgery can be used to remove all cancer cells and if possible, the entire liposarcoma but only on special instances when the tumor has grown next to an organ. In this case, removing the entire liposarcoma might be challenging or even impossible and a doctor may recommend other mode of treatment in-order to shrink the tumor making it easier for removal during an operation.

2. Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy generally uses drugs in-order to kill cancer cells but not all types of liposarcoma tend to be sensitive to chemotherapy drugs. Therefore, a thorough analysis of cancer cells by expert pathologists may determine if the chemotherapy can help. Often, chemotherapy has been used after a patient has undergone a surgery in-order to kill any other remaining cancer cells or used to shrink a tumor before surgery. In some instances, chemotherapy has been used together with radiation therapy.

3. Radiation therapy

This mode of treatment uses powerful energy beams like X-rays and protons in-order to kill cancer cells. On certain occasion, radiation may be used to kill any other remaining cancer cells after surgery. In addition, doctors use radiation to shrink tumors so as to make it more easier for surgeons to remove the entire tumor during the surgery.
