Breast implants and cancer: Are they related?
Breast implants are now facing a new controversy. Use of certain breast implants can now lead to an uncommon cancer of the immune system according to The Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Very limited knowledge has been gathered till now and therefore, the research in the field to establish the relationship between breast implants and cancer need to be done extensively.
Breast augmentation is the cosmetic surgery procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breasts by using either implants or the transfer of your own body fat to your breasts. Most patients and surgeons would claim that using breast implants to improve your breast size and volume creates a longer-lasting, natural-looking breast enhancement. Replacement of breast implants after 5-10 years of use can even be extended with proper care and monitoring. However, breast implants are now facing a new controversy. Use of certain breast implants can now lead to an uncommon cancer of the immune system according to The Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Breast implants and cancer: What are the odds?
It has been assumed that there’s secretion of fluid near implant and in some cases, it gets transmitted to a person’s body and results in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The warning signs arise within seven to eight years of implants so, an awareness regarding its symptoms is crucial. Textured breast implants are directly associated with the generation of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) and there has been an increased number of cases associated with BIA-ALCL. It makes it crucial to have friendly and informed conversations about the risk of BIA-ALCL, breast implants, and cancer.
Breast implants and cancer: The symptoms
It is also seen that symptoms of breast cancer are often mistreated for shingles and mastitis. So, primary care physicians play a vital role in disseminating information on the development and treatment of such cancer cells.
Breast implants and cancer: Research findings
According to the FDA estimates, very few about 1 in 3,817 to 30,000 women are prone to the risk of this cancer. But, it’s hard to ascertain the development of the disease. Till now, the research and findings state that irritation caused in textured implants cause a reaction in tissue which leads to inflammation. The other theory accused breast capsule’s particulates or silicone particles but it needs more research to testify.
Though there are very few fractions of development of cancer on women with breast implants, informed consent, a regular check-up, and information on the warning signs could help to detect cancer at an early stage. At the national level, keeping the national registry of women with implants will help to track the health history of such patients and will also develop a national system for categorizing the implant’s surface texture.
